Frequently Asked Questions

What is PAL?

The PAL (Partners At Learning) Program is the service-learning division of UCSD's Education Studies. PAL classes give UCSD students meaningful opportunities to learn about and experience issues of equity and education in San Diego's K-12 schools. Through PAL, UCSD students serve as tutors and mentors in K-12 classrooms throughout San Diego County. Each year PAL students contribute about 20,000 hours of service to under-served schools.

Do I have to want to be a teacher?

No. These classes are open to students from all majors and colleges. Many students take PAL classes in order to work with children and youth, to get real world experience, or to do community service. PAL classes also fulfill GE and significant writing requirements for some colleges, as well as some of the requirements for a minor in EDS.

What's the difference between a mentor and a tutor?

PAL mentors work closely with one or two students. PAL tutors are assigned to a teacher and work with individuals and small groups in the classroom. Both PAL mentors and tutors work in schools and strive to enhance K-12 students' achievement and motivation.

How do you choose the schools?

PAL partner schools are typically in lower income neighborhoods. Students at these schools lack college role models and benefit greatly from UCSD students' help with their academic and social development.

What is the time commitment?

As part of PAL's service-learning curriculum you must spend a minimum of 40 hours in the field over the course of the quarter. This averages about 4-6 hours per week. PAL classes meet once a week (lecture and section). You should also set aside time each week for reading and written assignments.

Do I need a car?

No. If you don't have a car we will either place you at a school easily accessible by public transportation or help you find a carpool with other UCSD students going to the same site.

Do I need a TB test?

Yes. All volunteers at schools need a tb test. You can get it done at the Student Health Center on campus or you can get one at a medical facility covered by your insurance provider.

Why should I take a PAL class?

Regardless of your career and educational goals, you will benefit from the real world skills and the unique perspective gained from taking a PAL class. Working with children and their families, interacting with education professionals, and tackling authentic challenges will enhance your communication and social skills. Most importantly, you will be contributing to the community and making a difference.
