Biography
for Randall Souviney
Randall Souviney, Senior Lecturer Emeritus and past Director of
Education Studies, retired in January 2008. He received his Ph.D.
in Education from Arizona State University in 1977. He has served
as the principal investigator on several research and development
projects, notably the Indigenous Mathematics Project that studied
elementary mathematics teaching and learning in Papua New Guinea,
the National Network Testbed InternNet Project that experimented
with internet resources for teacher education, the Community of Explorers
Project that introduced network-enabled science simulations to practicing
teachers, and the Visualizing Earth
Project that developed online visualization tools to facilitate
the use of space-based imagery in middle school science instruction.
He currently is one of the lead researchers for the Performance Assessment
for California Teachers (PACT) project that has developed a California
Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved assessment instrument
for preservice teachers. He has authored or co-authored over 100
teacher education articles and books on mathematics, science, and
computer education, including Solving Math Problems Kids Care About,
2nd Edition (Good Year Books, 2006), "Performance Assessment and Electronic Portfolios" (The
Clearing House, 2005), "Visualizing
Earth From the Classroom" (Meridian:
A Middle School Computer Technologies Journal, 1999), "The
EarthKAM Project: Creating Space Imaging Tools for Teaching and Learning" (Computers
and Geoscience, 2000), and a middle school text series preAlgebra & Algebra
Makes Sense (Dale Seymour Publications, 2001, 2002).
