Colin Ong-Dean is Assistant Project Scientist in Education Studies at UCSD. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology at UCSD. He currently works full-time on a federally funded evaluation of the Striving Readers Initiative in the San Diego Unified School District. Prior to entering graduate study at UCSD, Colin studied briefly at the University of Chicago and earned his B.A. from Wesleyan University.

His research is broadly concerned with educational practices and policies and their relationship to gender, race, and class inequalities and identities. In recently completed research—appearing in a forthcoming monograph, Distinguishing Disability (University of Chicago Press)—he has examined the ways in which parents used their cultural and economic resources to support claims about their children's disabilities and related needs. In his current research, he is especially interested in the relationships among teachers' social identities, their roles and statuses in schools, and their representations of students' abilities and needs.
