UCSDs Doctor of Education: Teaching
and Learning
2007 Graduates
Education Studies salutes its second set of graduates
from the UCSD Doctor of Education in Teaching and
Learning
program. This doctoral program is geared toward professional
educators and it provides the opportunity for students
to conduct programmatic research within their current
workplace. The program provides the research methodology
and advanced knowledge necessary to address fundamental
questions about teaching and learning to improve access
to quality education for all students. Each of our
graduates is a unique and innovative contributor
to education.

We are proud to announce that one of our very own
Education Studies MA graduates,
Dr. April Maskiewcz, is the 2006 recipient of the Jean
Fort Dissertation Prize.
This award, established in honor of Jean Fort, UCSD's
longtime Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Research,
is awarded annually to a Ph.D. recipient of unusual
intellectual breadth whose doctoral research has
met the highest standards
of academic excellence and may make a significant contribution
on an issue of humanitarian or public concern.
A Spring 2006 Ph.D. graduate in the joint doctoral
program of Math and Science Education, Dr. Maskiewczs dissertation
entitled, Re-thinking Biology Instruction: The
Application of DNR-based Instruction to the Learning
and Teaching of Biology examines how the
principles of DNR-based instruction in Mathematics
can be applied
to the learning of biology within the context of
ecology. Through clinical and teaching interviews,
and a 10-week
teaching experiment, she documents the evolution
of students' understanding and identifies the types
of situations
that provoked in them an intellectual need to develop
the desired ways of understanding and thinking.
Her dissertation is a contribution to the scholarly
discourse
in education
on learning in biology and puts her at the forefront
of the development of theory for re-conceptualizing
biology instruction.
Out of a record number of applicants, we are proud
to have one of our members of the growing Education
Studies
family as the winning recipient and look forward to
being a part of the exciting road that lies before
her. Congratulations,
Dr. April Maskiewcz!

Attention to All,
We have
established a Joint program
of graduate study leading to the Degree of Doctor of
Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership at the
University of California, San
Diego and California State University, San Marcos.
The faculties of Education Studies at the
University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the
College
of Education at the California State University, San
Marcos (CSUSM)
are offering a Joint Education Doctorate
(Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership. This program
addresses advanced study of academic administrative
leadership and research skills that will foster evidence-based
decision making in local schools and colleges. The
student
cohort consists primarily of regional preschool
through grade 12 (P-12) and post-secondary educators
who have demonstrated leadership potential in their
respective institutions. Ed.D. students conduct
research on professional practice embedded within their
own institutional work. Their research
topics address specific local problems that also
have national implications for teaching and learning,
school reform, and professional development. Inquiries
may be addressed to Director Randy Souviney at rsouviney@ucsd.edu.
