This admission instruction sheet is exclusively for candidates who are in the process of taking the Educational Foundations coursework and are applying for admission into the Single Subject Credential Professional Preparation component of the Master of Education/Single Subject Credential Program.
This program of study will lead to a California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential.
Applicants will be evaluated to determine their fitness for continuation into the Professional Preparation component of the program. If you have not yet completed the Foundations coursework, please refer to the instruction sheet for the Single Subject Credential Educational Foundations. You will be notified once your application has been processed and EDS will contact you if you are missing basic requirements for admission. Please do not contact EDS to check on your status.
The Graduate Professional Preparation
component for the Single Subject Program is fulfilled
over one
academic year that begins in the Summer (Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring),
and one additional summer program. The application
deadline is February 1st, 2010.
Applicants interested in Financial Aid should
complete the Free Application for Financial Student
Aid (FAFSA) as
soon as possible, preferably by March 2. Contact Student

Applicants complete the Official Application for Admission online. Please make sure to have entered the following information:

The following instruction
sheet is for you to know what additional documents
must be submitted to Education Studies
in order for your file to be considered for admission.
Applicants for the Professional Preparation component
of the Single Subject Program must
demonstrate satisfaction of the following requirements
and must submit the following items (1-9) no
later than February 1, 2008 to :

- Two Official Transcripts
from every college and/or university that you have attended. If the Sensitivity to Second Language Acquisition requirement was completed during high school, one official transcript from high school must be submitted as well.
B.A. or B.S., with a major field of study in the area corresponding to the credential subject
English: majors equivalent to UCSD Literature and Linguistics majors; all English majors.
Mathematics: all Mathematics majors; majors equivalent to any UCSD Engineering major or Computer Science major.
Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, or Physics: all majors in the natural sciences (excludes Psychology).
A 3.0 cumulative GPA is required from the institution awarding the bachelors degree.
- Three Letters of Recommendation
Letters from references, who have observed applicants work with students, and university faculty, who can attest to their academic potential, are of highest priority. Letters from former employers, associates, or friends are considered to a lesser extent when reviewing the application.
- Statement of Purpose
This should be a one to two page typed essay focusing on the following three areas:
- Your reasons for choosing education as a career
and for applying to Education Studies
at UC San Diego.
- Your experience working with
students from various cultural backgrounds in
the public schools and any related experience
you feel is appropriate.
- Your community service experiences, especially those in culturally diverse settings.
- Your reasons for choosing education as a career
and for applying to Education Studies
at UC San Diego.
- Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) General Test
Look at the GRE website for updated information, or call 1-800-473-2255. This test must be taken before the admission deadline. When you take the exam request that the official score report to be sent electronically to UCSD (the code for UCSD is R4836). If you have already taken the test and did not request the scores to be sent to UCSD, you will need to contact ES and have your scores sent electronically.
- California Basic Skills
Test (CBEST)
You are responsible for sending EDS the official, original 4x4 CBEST passing report card. You cannot be admitted into the program without us having the CBEST card in your file. Register online or by phone at (916) 928-4001.
- California Subject Examination
for Teachers (CSET) for Single Subject or Subject
Matter Preparation Program (SMPP)
The official, original CSET score report must be sent to EDS. Register for the exam online or by phone at (916) 928-4003. Or, if you are doing the SMPP instead, you must contact Ed Ashton at (858) 534-7297 in order for her to do a SMPP review for you by the deadline. EDS will send you a copy of the SMPP evaluation if you are admitted into the program. Note: You must be 100% complete by the end of July in order for you to begin your internship.
- U.S. Constitution requirement
Completion of a course including the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution. If this course was not taken at UCSD, please send EDS a copy of the formal course description for this class. It can only be used if U.S. Constitution is specifically outlined. Please include your name and the course number on the sheet as well. Or, you may send EDS an official transcript that verifies passage of the appropriate exam offered through University Extension or the County Office of Education. - Sensitivity to Second
Language Learning and Acquisition
This can be fulfilled by one of three options:
- Completion of 9 quarter units or 6 semester
units of college coursework in a single/same language
that is not the applicants native language.
These units must be included in the official Transcript
submitted to EDS.
or
- An official high school transcript showing completion
of 3 years of secondary school course work in
a single language other than English. The coursework
must be taken in grades 7 through 12, with at
least a B average.
or
- Approval by the EDS director of an Essay describing
an experience that you feel shows language sensitivity
(see EDSs M.Ed./Credential program brochure
for full instructions).
- Completion of 9 quarter units or 6 semester
units of college coursework in a single/same language
that is not the applicants native language.
These units must be included in the official Transcript
submitted to EDS.
- TB Test -Medical Report
(copy acceptable) showing negative results,
dated
after 9/1/09.
Keep a copy of the TB test for your records, since you will need it when you apply for a teaching position and EDS will NOT be able to provide you with copies of any admissions materials.

In making decisions for advancement to the Professional
Preparation component, faculty will consider the level
of progress in area (1) and satisfactory completion
of areas (2-6) of the following categories:
1) Quality of Education Foundations Coursework and Field Performance
2) Professionalism
3) The California Basic Skills Test (CBEST)
4) U.S. Constitution Requirement
5) Sensitivity to Second Language Learning and Acquisition
6) California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) or Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP)
EDS offers coursework
for teachers that want to be prepared for Bilingual
(Spanish) classrooms. If you have any questions or would
