This admission instruction sheet is exclusively for candidates who have NOT completed the Educational Foundations coursework at UCSD. You are applying for admission into the Multiple Subject Educational Foundations component of the Master of Education/Multiple Subject Credential Program. If you think you are looking at the wrong instruction sheet, or if you have already completed the Foundations coursework, please go to our web site at http://eds.ucsd.edu for detailed information about our programs, or contact EDS at (858) 534-8834 to talk to an advisor. You will be notified once your application has been processed, and EDS will contact you if you are missing basic requirements for admission. Please do not contact EDS to check on your status.

After completion of the Educational Foundations coursework, students will be evaluated to determine their fitness for continuation into the Professional Preparation component leading to a California Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.

The Graduate Educational Foundations component for the Multiple Subject Program is fulfilled through a Summer Intensive Program. The application deadline is: February 1st, 2010.

Please note that applicants interested in this program should already have some experience working with children in classrooms.

Applicants interested in Financial Aid should complete the Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible, preferably by March 2. Contact Student Financial Services at 858-534-3807 if you have any questions.

Application Procedures

Applicants complete the Official Application for Admission online. Please make sure to have entered the following information:

The following instruction sheet is for you to know what additional documents must be submitted to Education Studies in order for your file to be considered for admission. Applicants for the Educational Foundations, Summer Intensive component of the Multiple Subject Program must demonstrate satisfaction of the following requirements and must submit the following items (1-9) no later than February 1st, 2010 to:

  1. Two Official Transcripts
    from every college and/or university that you have attended. If the sensitivity to second language acquisition requirement was completed during high school, one official transcript from high school must be submitted as well.

    Please note that your bachelors degree must be in a major field of study at UCSD or equivalent to one offered at UCSD (some examples of majors NOT eligible: Business, Education, Liberal Studies, Marketing, Recreation): or a B.A. or B.S. in any major field from another University of California campus. A 3.0 cumulative GPA is required from the school awarding the bachelor's degree.

  2. Three Letters of RecommendationThe following are suggested sources in order of importance:
    1. Professors/Instructors from your major field of study at your undergraduate university who can evaluate your academic qualifications for graduate study and your communication skills.
    2. A teacher, administrator, or other individual who can evaluate your ability to work with children and/or adolescents.
    3. An employer or other individual who can evaluate your work experience and other personal characteristics.

  3. Statement of Purpose
    This should be a one to two page typed essay focusing on the following three areas:
    1. Your reasons for choosing education as a career and for applying to Education Studies at UC San Diego.
    2. Your experience working with students from various cultural backgrounds in the public schools and any related experience you feel is appropriate.
    3. Your community service experiences, especially those in culturally diverse settings.

  4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test
    Look at the GRE website for updated information, or call 1-800-473-2255. This test must be taken before the admission deadline. When you take the exam request that the official score report to be sent electronically to UCSD (the code for UCSD is R4836). If you have already taken the test and did not request the scores to be sent to UCSD, you will need to contact ES and have your scores sent electronically.

  5. California Basic Skills Test (CBEST) to meet basic skills requirement. You are responsible for sending EDS the official, original 4x4 CBEST passing report card. You cannot be admitted into the program without us having the CBEST card in your file. Register online or by phone at (916) 928-4001.

    OR New Option:

    Multiple Subject candidates are also able to meet this basic skills requirement by taking and passing the CSET: Multiple Subjects (item # 6 see below-which is already required) + The new CSET: Writing Skills Examination (test code # 142).

    By passing this new test (142), candidates will be exempt from taking the CBEST.

  6. California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) for Multiple Subject (subtests 101, 102, 103). Completion of this requirement is mandatory regardless on how the basic skills requirement is satisfied (item #5). The official, original CSET score report must be sent to EDS. Register online or by phone at (916)928-4003. Due to recent changes in legislation, students must now pass the CSET exam.

  7. U.S. Constitution Requirement
    Completion of a course including the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution. If this course was not taken at UCSD, please send EDS a copy of the formal course description for this class. It can only be used if U.S. Constitution is specifically outlined. Please include your name and the course number on the sheet as well. Or, you may send EDS an official transcript that verifies passage of the appropriate exam offered through University Extension or the County Office of Education. Contact the EDS office at (858) 534-1680 for additional information.

  8. Sensitivity to Second Language Learning and Acquisition
    This can be fulfilled by one of three options:
    1. Completion of 9 quarter units o 6 semester units of college coursework in a single/same language that is not the applicant's native language. These units must be included in the official Transcript submitted to EDS.
    2. or

    3. An official High School Transcript where completion of 3 years of secondary school course work in a single language other than English is shown. The coursework must be taken in grades 7 through 12, with at least a B average.
    4. or

    5. Approval by the EDS director of an Essay describing an experience that you feel shows language sensitivity (see EDS's M.Ed./Credential program brochure for full instructions).

  9. TB Test -Medical Report (copy acceptable) showing negative results, dated after 9/1/09.
    Keep a copy of the TB test for your records, since you will need it when you apply for a teaching position and EDS will NOT be able to provide you with copies of any admissions materials.

In making decisions for advancement to the professional preparation component, faculty will consider the level of progress in area (1) and satisfactory completion of areas (2-6) of the following categories:

1. Quality of Education Foundations Coursework and Field Performance
2. Professionalism.
3. The California Basic Skills Test (CBEST)
4. U.S. Constitution Requirement
5. Sensitivity to Second Language Learning and Acquisition
6. California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET)
